Dive into what maps are used for and how they’re created, whether they’re real or imagined, with Illustrator and Cartographer Abrian Curington.

Ever wonder how the maps in your favorite books are made? We’ll walk through mapping basics, then save some time for you to draw a draft of your own illustrated map! Have a map you’re already working on? Feel free to bring it along!

Through original illustrations, examples and hands-on demonstration, you'll discover:

Why maps? Aren't all the places discovered by now?
How can maps help us process and remember?
What are the elements of mapmaking?
How do I make my own map?

About the presenter:

Abrian Curington is a visual storyteller and cartographer. She graduated from Western Washington University, with a Bachelor of Arts and has a graduate certificate in GIS Cartography from the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

On land, Abrian creates maps, comics and illustrations for clients and personal fun, featuring worlds both real and imagined. At sea, she has served as a STEMSEAS instructor aboard the R/V Kilo Moana, a Science Communication Fellow aboard the E/V Nautilus, and an Artist-at-Sea aboard the R/V Falkor. Abrian likes exploring the curiosities that come from the intersection of multiple disciplines and ideas.
